Our Vision

A regenerative built environment prioritises bio-based materials – wood, hemp, straw, or bamboo – that are sustainably sourced and renewable. These materials not only replace carbon-intensive options like cement and steel, but also store the carbon dioxide that is removed from the atmosphere as trees and plants grow. In this way, bio-based buildings and cities act as artificial carbon sinks, helping to limit global warming to below 2°C.

Circularity extends the life of building materials by designing for reuse, recovery, and recycling. Instead of extracting and discarding resources, materials are kept in continuous use – through strategies like design for disassembly, reusing existing components, and minimising demolition waste. This approach reduces raw material demand and landfill use, addressing both climate impact and resource scarcity.

Regenerative buildings reduce energy consumption through efficient design and on-site renewable energy production. Passive strategies – such as optimised building envelopes – and technologies like solar photovoltaics (PV) allow buildings to generate more energy than they use, lowering operational emissions and supporting broader energy transitions. Positive energy buildings can also feed energy into local grids or offset more intensive sectors.

Rather than standardised design, regenerative buildings reflect local identity by drawing on traditional knowledge, regional building culture, and climate-adapted techniques. This includes the use of local materials, integration of vernacular design, and consideration of modern urban needs like density and efficiency. The result is architecture that is culturally meaningful, socially appropriate, and environmentally grounded.

Nature-based solutions and green infrastructure – such as green roofs and walls, rain gardens, and vegetated spaces – are integrated into buildings and public environments. These features act as natural carbon sinks, while also improving air quality, regulating microclimates, reducing stress, and enhancing urban wellbeing. When designed as public spaces, these solutions can foster social interaction and contribute to a high quality of life, while also reducing operational emissions by insulating buildings and mitigating the heat island effect.

A regenerative built environment addresses social equity by serving the needs of all – especially marginalised and vulnerable groups. This includes the provision of affordable, safe, and accessible housing, equitable access to services, and inclusive public spaces that encourage interaction and participation. By aligning social justice with ecological goals, regeneration becomes not just environmentally responsible, but also human-centred and socially restorative.

Cities and neighbourhoods are organised so that essential services – work, education, healthcare, culture, and housing – are located in close proximity. Emphasis is placed on walkability, cycleability, inclusive public spaces, and accessible public transport. This model reduces dependence on energy and infrastructure, strengthens local economies, and enhances social cohesion and quality of life by bringing daily functions together.

Buildings and spaces are designed to flexibly accommodate changing social needs, technologies, and uses. This includes multi-functional design that integrates diverse functions over time and space. The ability to adapt and repurpose buildings increases occupancy and street vibrancy, extends the life of built assets, and reduces long-term environmental and financial costs.
